Guide · Anyone curious about how Apex Strengths thinks about strengths

What is the KWATS model?

KWATS stands for Knowledge, Will, Arena, Talent and Skill: the five things that together decide how far a person can go in a field.

By the Apex Strengths Team · Updated 17 October 2026

Most strengths tests measure one thing: talent. Talent matters, but plenty of talented people never reach the top of their field. The KWATS model, the framework behind Apex Strengths, looks at five things together.

LetterFactorQuestion it answers
KKnowledgeWhat do you know about your field?
WWillHow much do you love this work?
AArenaAre you in a place that lets you use your strengths?
TTalentWhat comes naturally to you?
SSkillWhat have you already proven with results?

Why all five matter

The factors work together. A gifted analyst in a role with no analysis, or a passionate teacher without the right knowledge, will not reach their apex. Apex Strengths shows each factor as Strong, Growing or To build, and points to the one that would make the biggest difference next.

Knowledge is the one factor a test cannot judge, so Apex Strengths does not guess it. Instead, the development plan lists the knowledge the best people in your fields have, and where to get it.
